As solicitor advocates, we work closely with barristers in resolving civil disputes of all types, whether contract disputes, employment matters, issues between commercial landlords and tenants, IP infringement, liability of insurers, shipping cases, defective products, media and entertainment industry matters…the list of commercial disputes is endless and we appear regularly in court litigation or ADR/arbitration.
Contract drafting, one of the most critical parts of contract management providing the foundation upon which the contractual relationship is constructed and requiring clarity and precision making sure that both parties needs are met and providing a strong layer of legal protection. The secrets of good contract drafting includes the ability to express effective contract terms free from archaisms, redundancies, ambiguities. Contract disputes are among the most common types of all business disputes, including breach of contract, fraud, misrepresentation, coercion, force majeure, mistake, legality, etc.
GDPR addresses the transfer of personal data within and outside the EU and EEA areas and gives control to individuals over their personal data, simplifying the regulatory environment for data by unifying the regulation within the EU. Controllers and processors of personal data must put in place appropriate technical and organisational measures to implement the data protection principles and to safeguard and control their data and put into place effective measures. Privacy in English law is a rapidly developing area of English law that considers in what situations an individual has a legal right to privacy in relation to personal or private information.
ADL has a wealth of first-rate talent & expertise in employment law, being commercial, persuasive and pragmatic. Our lawyers are equally at ease in the corporate boardroom setting as well as when dealing with individual employees or groups of employees or before Employment and Professional Disciplinary and Regulatory Tribunals as well as Appellate Courts. Financial regulators, both domestic & abroad, are increasingly looking into the conduct of UK financial services firms. We provide expert advice to financial services firms & senior management on the complexities of financial regulations, compliance, Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) investigations, applications for authorisation, supervision enquiries etc. as well as in specialist fields such as cryptocurrencies and tokens and whether these are caught by approval requirements. Headed by Nick Lockett, a former merchant banker, our team aims to reduce likelihood of costly and disruptive investigations as well as reducing risk of financial penalties and sanctions and provide a legislative watch service.
There are no specific laws regulating franchise agreements in the UK and parties are generally free to agree all the terms of contracts, save to the extent that laws affecting commercial contracts may apply, such as competition law and this contrasts with many jurisdictions outside the UK that specifically regulate franchise relationships, including mandatory cooling-off periods, disclosure obligations, TM regulations, capital restrictions, good faith and marketing obligations, rights of sale and transfer. UK law also provides controls on misrepresentation, competition and restraint on trade and the remedies available. So whether you’re selling franchise rights, buying a franchise or seeking to start a franchise, or in the middle of a franchise dispute, Call us.
Insurance law is the practice of law surrounding insurance, including insurance policies and claims. It can be broadly broken into three categories – regulation of the business of insurance; regulation of the content of insurance policies; and regulation of claim handling. ADL provides, together with specialist barristers, a full service claims proposition from disputes arising from whether cover is available, to strategic litigation across a broad range of insurance disciplines, including business interruption insurance, coverage exceptions, communicative and occupational disease, property damage, product liability, directors and officers, political risk and terrorism, professional risks, cyber, regulatory, reinsurance, subrogation, recoveries, marine and goods in transit.
Gerardo Aprovitolo, one of our founding Lawyers, is dual qualified in both English and Italian Law, and as an avvocato is able to provide clients with legal advice on both English and Italian legal issues and is fluent in both Italian and English. Our Italian team offers our British and Italian clients strategic focussed advice and cross border legal assistance on a wide range of issues such as corporate and commercial law, franchising, property law and estate planning, and together with our intrinsic knowledge of both the Italian and British business cultures, ADL provides an unrivalled bespoke service tailored to suit our clients’ needs.
Nick Lockett, one of our founders, being a commercial and IP barrister with a high-tech & telecoms specialisation, was the first barrister in Europe to specialise in Internet, back in 1992 and wrote the first UK Internet law book, developed the first Court Order to be allowed to be served by the internet and for many years was a lead editor for World Internet Law. He has nearly 30 years expertise in high-tech disputes as well as Computer and A.I. Law, (including related intellectual property disputes and contractual disputes, restrictions on employees and trade secrets as well as A.I legal and ethical issues) & is recognised worldwide for his experience and client service.
We’ve acted for many exciting start-ups, entrepreneurs and established corporations in IT and Intellectual property (copyright, trademarks, patents, licensing, brand identity, IP audits etc). Our experienced team of IP solicitors, assisted by some of the most able barristers in the field, provide a strong understanding of the technicalities of IP and needs in the competitive marketplace and provide you with advise and assertion of your rights, defences to claims of infringement, dispute resolution and all other Intellectual Property services. Our lawyers have advised in many of the highest profile cases in the UK and in other countries where the claims have a UK element.
As well as acting in respect of medical negligence cases via our professional negligence team, we also work with a large number of barristers to provide a wide range of medical professionals and employers and health trusts with defences to claims for malpractice, as well as successfully defending medical practitioners in relation to fitness to practise proceedings brought by their Regulatory Bodies (such as the General Medical Council (GMC), Nursing & Midwifery Council NMC etc. We are a leading firm in this area and we pride ourselves on achieving the best possible results for our clients. We have also acted for medical practitioners in making claims for unlawful working conditions whether exposure to medical harm without adequate PPE or subjecting them to unreasonable working conditions, PTSD claims and automatically unfair dismissals due to health and safety issues under the Employment Rights Act.
Professional negligence arises where a professional represents him/herself as having above average skills and abilities (i.e. is an expert in the area) and then falls below those standards. This applies to financial advisers, doctors, dentists, architects, valuers, surveyors, accountants, solicitors, etc where they fail to perform to the standards required of them, resulting in their client suffering damage or loss and in so doing breach the duty of care to their client to perform their job to a reasonable standard and with reasonable care.
With an increasing amount of legislation regulating business activities, both companies and individuals may find themselves being investigated for a variety of regulatory offences and having experienced legal advice and support from the earliest opportunity can make all the difference to the outcome of any such investigation. Working with leading barristers chambers, we have a business-defence team able to represent clients facing investigations and prosecutions from local authorities, Trading Standards, the Health and Safety Executive, the Environment Agency and a wide range of other organisations. As well as representing clients facing a regulatory investigation, we can also help with preventative measures and risk audits for your business so you can avoid the risk of regulatory proceedings.

ADL Solicitors was one of the first truly distributed Law Firms allowing for a high degree of flexibility in terms of staff and resources and creating a degree of flexibility not usually available in UK law firms. The structure allows a significant growth of the numbers of fee earners without the usual associated long-term overheads. This allows the firm to match resources of the large firms often acting for counter-parties in cases we undertake.
Consultants who have many years of experience are held on an availability list. They may be starting out in their own practice after many years working for a large city firm, they may be solicitors who are on maternity leave or who have young families who cannot serve the full-time needs of larger firms, they may be overseas lawyers acting as paralegals, the list is extensive. They area able to be brought into the firm at a moments notice. All are qualified lawyers either in the UK or in Europe. In some cases, they have taken a sebattical to obtain experience of law in England, taking that experience back to their country in a few years in order to be more attractive in the job market. They are engaged as consultants on a self-employed basis and “as needed”, although every lawyer is hand selected for each case and as is appropriate to their experience.
For example, when carrying out intellectual property cases , the European IP lawyers are just as experienced as English lawyers as until Brexit, it was a common system and all of the lawyers are experenced in IP issues and able to seamlessly carry out UK IP cases easily. (In fact, most of our IP lawyers are either dual qualified or are directly supersed by a UK qualified advocate, being a solicitor (usually a solicitor advocate with higher rights ) or a barrister.
In most cases, the case will also be overseen by external barrister, often a QC and we are used to working closely with our learned friends at the Bar of England and Wales.
All of our supervising teams are Solicitors with at least 10 years experience and all are well versed in all types of litigation. In fact, Nick Lockett, our IP Partner is an ex-barrister previously having practised in King’s Bench Walk for many years & holds higher advocacy rights and has been awarded a well as and junior councils special certificate for acting (as well as solicitor) in place of junior counsel for a QC using higher rights certification and thereby significantly reducing costs. This attention to detail and high level of oversight may be a reason why he has never lost a count case since becoming a solicitor – yes, he has settled many cases where settlement was appropriate, but where a case has fought at trial, he has never (to date) lost a trial. This attention to detail also has other benefits as, unlike many other firms, ADL Solicitors has never had an insurance claim on its Professional Indemnity Insurance (PII) since commencement in 2001 when it was called ADL Legal. (Client Warning: Past Performance is no guarantee of future performance….🙂. )
I have used ADL for three critical cases for our organisation, and they have been outstanding and robust. Their initial advice is clear, commercial and sensible and stays that way. Clever Strategists.
“ADL Solicitors provided us with critical cover for our firm, covering both the role of internal counsel and compliance with a refreshing approach to reasonable fees.
ADL were truly outstanding, providing fast, effective, and decisive advice at a critical time and providing us with clear direction without the jargon that allowed us to successfully manage our way through issues.
